Learn about Ukrainian embroidery and this fabled style of counted thread work from Borshchiv in the Western region of the country. We will learn how to follow patterns and start stitching a simple floral motif which you can later repeat to create a sleeve decoration or stitch an entire traditional blouse, sorochka or vyshyvanka in Ukrainian. Sarah will share her research, 2017 visit to Lviv, and lessons from her Ukrainian teacher. This workshop makes an unconventional introduction to counted thread work with a twist.

CLASS MATERIALS

• Merino wool yarn- no. 3/ DK weight in black and another color of your choice (red or burgundy are nice) or DMC Woolly. We’ll start working in a color other than black as it’s easier to see.
• 8.5 oz. linen/ 36 threads per inch is what they use in Ukraine but it’s difficult to find elsewhere. Something like https://www.robertkaufman.com/fabrics/waterford_linen/W013-1387/ also works. A lower thread count will be easier to stitch.
• Size 22 cross stitch needle (DMC or other brand)
• Needle threader for yarn
• One skein of 6 stranded embroidery floss and a small piece of 18 count Evenweave linen just for learning the stitch (recommended to make it easier– but optional, especially for veteran stitchers)
• Hoop (optional)
• Scissors
• Magnification is very helpful and good light is a must!

OUR TEACHER
Sarah Pedlow

Sarah Pedlow is interested in traditional embroidery, cultural preservation, and creating a global community of makers connected via cultural heritage skills. From 2012 – 2015 she researched Hungarian Kalotaszeg written embroidery in Transylvania, Romania and made products with women artisans.

Through many trips to Hungary and Romania her love of embroidery grew, prompting travel for artist residencies in Iceland, Mexico, The Netherlands, and Ukraine.  In April 2019 she moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to Amsterdam, NL. Sarah teaches workshops in the US and Europe and now leads small group, creative embroidery and culture retreats in Portugal and Romania.  She holds a BA in Studio Art and French Studies from Scripps College, Claremont, CA and an MFA in Visual Arts from Rutgers University.
