Hand-Sewn Quilting Series I: Embroidered Quilt Block

A Virtual Class with Ekta Kaul

Blue fabric with white stitching patterns.

In this workshop led by artist Ekta Kaul, you will be invited to explore rhythm through stitch. Rhythms are around us and within us. Seasons, tides, circadian cycles are all examples of rhythm in nature. Stitch is a wonderful tool to create rhythm on cloth, inviting the viewer’s eye to move along the quilt in a harmonious way. Ekta will guide you in creating stitched rhythms with a focus on line and composition, drawing references from a varied vocabulary of fundamental stitches including heritage ones like kantha.

This class is part of the Hand-Sewn Quilting Series.

Perfect for the beginner, our Hand-Sewn Quilting Series aims to demystify the act of hand sewing a quilt block through a sequence of diverse forays into block constructing. While rooted in quilting’s history of using scrap fabrics to make beautiful coverlets, this series gathers contemporary voices and techniques to give the new sewist a set of skills and the confidence to take on an existing pattern or personal composition.

Exposure to six unique teachers affords any sewist, seasoned or novice, the opportunity to witness varied approaches even within the same technique. Experiencing the series as whole is sure to provide a comprehensive foundation and will get you well on your way in a joyful practice of hand-sewn quilting.

The blocks from each class can then be assembled together in any way you like to represent a sampler of skills. They would also make great pillows or patches for another textile.

We hope you will join us for all six of our quilting classes to increase your confidence and skill in hand sewing quilt blocks. You can sign up for the entire series here.

OUR TEACHER
Ekta Kaul

Ekta Kaul is an award winning London based artist. Her artistic practice is focused on creating narrative maps that explore places, history and belonging through stitch. A pared back aesthetic coupled with a highly considered use of graphic marks and lines form the core elements of her work. These are underpinned by a thoughtful approach to making with meaning, a deep interest in heritage and a firm commitment to sustainability. “I am drawn to maps not only because they are beautiful objects in their own right but also because they are repositories for meaning. A map can reveal so many stories and can become a portal to places that are significant in personal narratives.”, says Ekta.

Ekta works on public and private commissions taking inspiration from the history, architecture and personal narratives of place. Her work is held in several collections including Crafts Council, Liberty’s of London, the Gunnersbury Museum and Chiswick Library. Her recent projects include an artist residency at Chinatown London exploring its hidden stories and an interactive public art commission from Waterman’s London. Ekta exhibits her work at a select group of galleries in the UK and internationally including The New Craftsmen, Contemporary Applied Arts, Museum of Art and Design NYC, Conran Shop Tokyo among others. She has received awards from the Crafts Council and the Arts Council, England & was the finalist in Jerwood Makers Open 2019. Ekta teaches Masterclasses at institutions internationally including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge. She works from her studio in West London.
