In this class, you will learn how to use scrap fabrics, thread and yarn to create a unique representation of a landscape based on your favorite place in nature or a scene from your imagination. Kim will show you various hand-sewing techniques such as appliqué, couching, and decorative stitches to add texture, atmosphere, and depth to your chosen landscape. She will also share how she chooses colors and patterns that complement each other when creating a composition with intention and improvisation.

• Scrap fabric
• Fabric for stabilization (e.g. muslin) about 10” x 10”
• Threads in various weights: embroidery thread, quilting thread, sashiko thread, any thread you have on hand
• Hand-sewing needles
• Thimble

Our Teacher

Kim Goings is a textile artist living in New York, NY. She grew up in Florida and attended
Savannah College of Art and Design for her BFA and MA in Production & Costume Design.
While working in costumes for theater and film, Kim discovered quilting a few years into her
career in New York. She found herself re-working thrifted clothes and fabric remnants into quilts
to gift to friends and loved ones before realizing she was also incorporating elements of
storytelling into her designs. Kim began Terra Quilting Co. as a way to share her quilts and to
challenge herself to further explore the medium of textile art. Her pieces are influenced by
nature, memory, art and intuitive craft. She often experiments with natural dyes to give new life
to secondhand textiles and repurposed garments, and adds dimension and texture to her work
through hand-quilting, and mindful hand-stitching techniques. Kim has received artist
residencies through SCAD Alumni Atelier in Lacoste, France and Wildacres Retreat in North
Carolina. Her work has also shown at the Woodstock Artists Association and Museum in
Woodstock, NY.
