Discover the wonderful possibilities of Derwent Inktense pencils as you transform a printed image of an apple and its leaves into a richly coloured piece of textile art. Inktense pencils offer intense, luminous colour and a wonderful range of possibilities for working on fabric.
In this hands-on class, Ana will demonstrate a variety of techniques for working with Inktense on fabric, from creating delicate washes of colour to building deeper, more vibrant layers. You’ll experiment with colour and discover how to bring the design to life.
Once the painting is complete, we’ll add simple hand stitches to enhance the image, introduce texture and detail, and give the finished piece that special textile quality. No previous experience with Inktense or embroidery is necessary—just bring your curiosity and a willingness to play with colour, fabric and stitch.

Class Materials
- ½ yard of smooth, inexpensive cotton fabric such as muslin, calico, or a piece of an old
cotton sheet.- This fabric will be placed underneath the printed cotton fabric to catch any
excess medium that may seep through.

- A small dish for the aloe vera (provided in the kit)
A class kit containing the cotton fabric with the printed design, Inktense Pencils by Derwent and additional materials will be provided separately and shipped to you before class.
Our Teacher
Ana Buzzalino is a fibre artist, textile storyteller, teacher, and lecturer whose work is defined by layers, texture, and a deep connection to the stories held within materials. Her creative process blends traditional and contemporary textile techniques, resulting in pieces that feel both timeless and strikingly modern.
Ana is drawn to the stories carried by materials—the marks left by time, the beauty of imperfection, and the memories embedded in objects and textiles. While her earlier work explored the textures and narratives found in weathered buildings, aged surfaces, and forgotten structures, her recent work has turned increasingly toward vintage fabrics, antique linens, lace, buttons, and found materials. Through quilts, textile books, and mixed media works, she honours the makers and hands that came before us, transforming treasured textiles into contemporary pieces that celebrate memory, connection, and the quiet beauty of slow making.
Her work has been recognized nationally and internationally, with awards at Quilt Canada, the Festival of Quilts in the UK, and the International Quilt Festival in Houston. More recently, one of her textile books was juried into the Grand National Fibre Art Exhibition – Textures of Canada, reflecting her ongoing exploration of textiles as a medium for storytelling, memory, and connection.
Ana shares her passion for textiles through teaching, writing, and lectures. She is a regular contributor to Quilting Arts Magazine and A Needle Pulling Thread and has appeared multiple times on Quilting Arts TV. In 2019, she was named Quilter of Distinction at Heritage Park Festival of Quilts, and in 2022 she was invited to appear on The Quilt Show.
With over four decades of experience working with textiles, Ana encourages students to slow down, experiment, and discover the possibilities of cloth, colour, stitch, and creative exploration.
