CURATING QUILT COLOR PALETTES

January 29, 2027 | Virtual Workshop | Amber Elliot

From the foundations of color theory to practical methods of fabric selection, this workshop explores how to create beautiful, cohesive ombre and gradient palettes for modern quilts. While gradient quilts are often associated with a dramatic ombre effect, a gradient-based color selection is a very effective way to create balanced, harmonious palettes for any quilt design, whether or not the finished project appears to be a “gradient” or “ombre” quilt.

We’ll begin with an in-depth discussion of color theory, including harmonies, value, saturation, and the principles behind successful ombre and gradient palettes. Special attention will be given to working with the discrete color choices available in quilting fabrics and translating color theory into practical fabric pulls.

The workshop will also cover strategies for incorporating both solids and prints into gradient palettes, including techniques for blending prints seamlessly while maintaining color flow and cohesion.

Following the instructional portion, participants will create their own ombre and gradient color palettes using the concepts discussed. Students will have the opportunity to share their palettes, receive feedback, ask questions, and explore ways to strengthen and refine their color choices.

This workshop expands on the concepts introduced in Quilts in Modern Color: Creating Ombre Palettes and is suitable for quilters of all experience levels.

Class Materials:

This class has flexible material requirements. You can use the suggested supplies below or pull from materials you already have on hand. The goal is to have a wide variety of colors to experiment with as you create gradient-style palettes.

Required:

  • Swatches (color swatches or fabric swatches): At least 20 different colors, though a larger selection will give you more options to work with. Swatches can be fabric, paint chips, or other color samples. A wide range of value and hue is very helpful.

Recommended:

  • Printed fabric swatch panel: An easy way to build a large collection of color swatches is to purchase a printed swatch panel and cut it apart. Any manufacturer will work (Amber recommends Riley Blake’s Confetti Cottons as good bang for your buck!)
  • Solid fat quarter bundle: A useful addition for experimenting with a larger amount of solid colors; just make sure that there are a wide variety of colors included!
  • Print swatches: A selection of printed fabrics to mix with your solids when creating palettes.
  • Color tools: Additional color reference tools can be helpful when developing and refining your palettes. (Amber likes to have a color wheel or color cards on hand)

About the Hand Sewn Quilting Series

Under the guidance of contemporary textile artists, participants of all levels will engage with various quilting techniques. Beginners will gain confidence and a deeper understanding of quilting foundations, while experienced makers will expand their skills and textile knowledge beyond the basics.
