Perfect for the beginner and the seasoned quilter alike (and if you’ve already joined our past two Hand-Sewn Quilting Series), the Hand-Sewn Quilting Series III takes students on a journey of different forms of hand-sewn quilt construction, from Hawaiian Quilting to Zhuang Patchwork Quilting. Rooted in the diverse history of quilting and taught by contemporary textile artists, this series combines enduring quilting techniques with new voices and approaches.
Beginners will come away with a newfound confidence in their quilting ability and a deeper understanding of the medium. More experienced makers will expand their textile horizons, as well as gaining new skills to use on personal projects. Experiencing the series as a whole is sure to provide a comprehensive foundation and will get you well on your way in a joyful practice of hand-sewn quilting.
We hope you will join us for all five of our quilting classes to experience new ways of quilting and broaden your knowledge of textile history. You can sign up for the entire series, or choose your own adventure by selecting the classes you’re most interested in.
The Series
Hawaiian Quilting
with Pat Gorelangton
Hawaiian Quilting is a style unique to the islands, featuring “echo” quilting lines throughout the design, though different details can be stitched to highlight different parts of the pattern. This class will be an introduction to Hawaiian Quilting, in which students will create an 18″x18″ piece that can be made into a pillow or a wall hanging.

In this workshop, you’ll explore the Kawandi technique to create a dynamic background for a small quilt. Then, let your creativity shine as you construct a house as unique as your own imagination. Add personal stories and texture with meditative hand-stitching, resulting in a meaningful piece that reflects your own experiences and artistic expression.

Stuffed Appliqué
with Nicholas Ball
In this workshop, Nicholas will take you through his step-by-step process of creating stuffed appliqués or traditional trapunto. The technique is an age-old one and the origins of the more familiar faux trapunto used by some quilters today. During the class, students will first make individual units by hand to practice the technique. Next, students will be free to continue to make individual units or work on a wholecloth example, which Nicholas will partially demonstrate. Students will also look at layered stuffed appliqué, as well as embellishing the finished shapes.
