Hand Sewn Quilting Series III: Hawaiian Quilting

A Virtual Class with Pat Gorelangton

Blue and white quilted fabric design.

Hawaiian Quilting is a style unique to the islands, featuring “echo” quilting lines throughout the design, though different details can be stitched to highlight different parts of the pattern. This class will be an introduction to Hawaiian Quilting techniques, as well as a discussion of the important role quilting has played in Hawaiian history and culture. In this class, students will create an 18″x18″ piece that can be made into a pillow or a wall hanging. The workshop will include the first part of the process, which is needle-turn appliquéing the pattern fabric to the background fabric, then the quilting process itself. Hawaiian quilting is all done by hand. It takes time and patience, but this allows the quilter to put their “mana” (their spirit) and their aloha into the quilt, whether it be something that beautifies their own home, or as a gift to someone.

Our Teacher

Pat Gorelangton
was born and raised in Hawaii, and except for living in Texas for 10 years, has lived there all her life. While working full-time in her family’s laundry business and raising 3 kids, Pat found that quilting gave her the “quiet time” she needed. She has been quilting for almost 40 years, and while she has made a number of patchwork quilts and dabbled in Baltimore album quilts and trapunto, her passion is Hawaiian quilting. Pat has been a member of the Poakalani Quilt Group for 17 years. One of Pat’s wall hangings is part of an exhibit at the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford, England, and the Auckland Museum in New Zealand recently acquired one of her king-size quilts. You can find more of Pat’s work on Instagram, or on the Poakalani website.
