Perfect for the beginner and the seasoned quilter alike, the Hand Sewn Quilting Series returns with a fourth installment to take students on a journey of different forms of hand sewn quilt construction, from Log Cabin to 3D Quilted Balls. This quilting series, led by contemporary textile artists, blends traditional techniques with fresh perspectives. Beginners will gain confidence and a deeper understanding of quilting foundations, while experienced makers will expand their skills and textile knowledge beyond the basics. Taking the full series offers a comprehensive foundation for a joyful hand sewn quilting practice. You can enroll in the entire series or select individual classes that interest you most.
The Series

Pennsylvania Dutch Quilted Ball
with Hannah Straubel
In this 2.5 hour class, we will create a no-sew quilted ornament using fabric scraps—a beginner-friendly, meditative project that’s as beautiful as it is practical. We’ll examine historical quilted ornaments passed down through Hannah’s family as examples of this enduring folk tradition, and explore creative ways to build on the foundational techniques introduced in class.

Exploration of Log Cabin
with Elliot Rockart
During the mid 19th century, a uniquely American quilt began to appear across the United States of America. Traditionally beginning with a red central square representing the warmth of a hearth or chimney, the quilt blocks are pieced together from thin strips of fabric layered in a pattern that mirrored the construction of a basic frontier structure: the log cabin.
Today, there are many different forms of log cabin quilts and seemingly infinite permutations of the design. Textile artist and scholar Elliot Rockart will walk students through three basic types of log cabin quilt block construction and how they can be used to create both quilts and other forms of pieced textile arts.

Foundation Piecing with Scraps and Strings
with Sarah Nishiura
Throughout quilt history, foundation piecing has allowed quilters to work with scrappy materials of different weights, textures, and weaves (think crazy quilts and string quilts). Foundation piecing is an excellent technique to play with whether you are after blocks with precise points that are guaranteed to match, or you want to create simple blocks that can be used to build improv compositions. Beginning with a brief history of foundation piecing and an introduction to the technique, participants will have the opportunity to sew their own simple blocks from the bits in their scrap bags. Finally, we will discuss the geometric potential of simple blocks to create complex patterns through repetition and rotation. Participants will be encouraged to continue to experiment after the workshop is over to develop their own unique compositions from their humble leftovers.

Skinny Inset Strip
with Jenny Haynes
This intriguing technique allows you to add a line drawing effect to your sewing and can be used for improv or precision piecing. In this class, you’ll learn to hand piece Drunkard’s Path blocks with and without skinny inset strips using Jenny’s Drunkard’s Path templates. Jenny will show you how to sew and trim the different blocks that make up this simple but striking design that looks great as a single circle or multiplied for those of you who’d like a long term slow-stitching project.
