Hawaiian quilting is a distinctive island tradition, known for its flowing, symmetrical patterns and signature “echo” quilting lines that radiate throughout the design. In this introductory workshop, participants will learn foundational Hawaiian quilting techniques while exploring the craft’s deep roots in Hawaiian history and cultural expression.
Students will learn all the necessary skills to create an 18″ x 18″ piece, suitable for a pillow or wall hanging. The class will cover the first stages of the process, including needle-turn appliqué to attach the pattern fabric to the background, followed by an introduction to hand quilting.
Hawaiian quilting is entirely hand-stitched, requiring time, focus, and care. This intentional process allows each quilter to infuse their work with personal meaning, sharing their spirit (“mana”) and sense of aloha, whether creating something for their own home or as a meaningful gift for someone else.

Our Teacher
Pat Gorelangton was born and raised in Hawaii, and except for living in Texas for 10 years, has lived there all her life. While working full-time in her family’s laundry business and raising 3 kids, Pat found that quilting gave her the “quiet time” she needed. She has been quilting for almost 40 years, and while she has made a number of patchwork quilts and dabbled in Baltimore album quilts and trapunto, her passion is Hawaiian quilting. Pat has been a member of the Poakalani Quilt Group for 19 years. One of Pat’s wall hangings was part of an exhibit at the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford, England, and one of her king-sized quilts was acquired by the Auckland Museum in New Zealand. In recent years, she was commissioned by the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery, as well as the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio. You can find more of Pat’s work on Instagram, or on the Poakalani website.
