Our Teacher
Kim Goings is a textile artist living in New York, NY. She grew up in Florida and attended the Savannah College of Art and Design for her BFA and MA in Production & Costume Design. While working in costumes for theater and film, Kim discovered quilting a few years into her career in New York. She found herself reworking thrifted clothes and fabric remnants into quilts to gift to friends and loved ones before realizing she was also incorporating elements of storytelling into her designs. Kim began Terra Quilting Co. as a way to share her quilts and to challenge herself to further explore the medium of textile art. Her pieces are influenced by nature, memory, art, and intuitive craft. She often experiments with natural dyes to give new life to secondhand textiles and repurposed garments, and adds dimension and texture to her work through hand-quilting and mindful hand-stitching techniques. Kim has received artist residencies through SCAD Alumni Atelier in Lacoste, France and Wildacres Retreat in North Carolina. Her work has also been shown at the Woodstock Artists Association and Museum in Woodstock, NY.
