PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH QUILTED BALL

November 6, 2026 | Virtual Workshop | Hannah Straubel

“Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.” This timeless Pennsylvania Dutch saying captures the simple, resourceful spirit at the heart of this workshop—and the values that shaped our teacher, Hannah Straubel’s upbringing.

We’ll begin by exploring the history and traditions of Pennsylvania Dutch textile folk art, looking at how crafting has long been a way to live in rhythm with the seasons, stay connected to the land, and pass down knowledge and wisdom through generations.

We will create a no-sew quilted ornament using fabric scraps—a beginner-friendly, meditative project that’s as beautiful as it is practical. We’ll examine historical quilted ornaments passed down through Hannah’s family as examples of this enduring folk tradition, and explore creative ways to build on the foundational techniques introduced in class.

Our Teacher

Hannah Straubel is a Brooklyn-based textile artist and Waldorf teacher working across hand-sewing, weaving, and slow craft traditions with an emphasis on process. Her practice is grounded in sustainability, seasonal rhythms, and staying playful.

Hannah’s background spans curative education, sociology, and anthropology, shaping an ongoing interest in how people learn, make meaning, and transmit knowledge through embodied practice across generations. She is especially drawn to textile arts as living cultural forms where geopolitics, migration, labor, and history are deeply interwoven into materials, traditions, and lore.

She is passionate about reconnecting with her own cultural heritage through craft, and about how textile practices can hold memory, continuity, and adaptation across time and place. Simplicity, time, and intentionality are central to how she approaches both making and teaching.

Alongside her studio work, she teaches middle school, where storytelling, observation, and project-based learning inform her broader approach to education and making.

She continues to study textile traditions through travel and workshops, including upcoming time in South America focused on Andean pebble weaving and backstrap weaving.
