In this class, you’ll learn the rich history of Phulkari, the folk embroidery of Punjab. Kaul will share the traditional types of Phulkari embroideries and will demonstrate the traditional technique of making a Bagh Phulkari motif, with darning stitch, herringbone, and one-sided satin stitch on a naturally dyed hand-spun cotton base with cotton floss. Additionally, Kaul will explore contemporary approaches and discuss how different thread counts affect the density of a pattern. By the end of the class, you will have the skills to create a Bagh Phulkari motif on a sampler and apply this knowledge to craft larger, more intricate works.
