Raffia embroidery is a contemporary embroidery technique developed by London-based fashion designer, textile artist and author Tihara Smith, inspired by Caribbean straw crafts. In this class, participants will be introduced to the inspiration
behind the technique and will also explore raffia, a natural fibre derived from the raffia palm tree, and learn how to use it as an embroidery material, working with both natural and paper raffia.
Working on a natural raffia fabric base, participants will learn the basics of raffia embroidery and create a raffia embroidery sample hoop, practising a selection of embroidery stitches using paper raffia. The sample hoop format allows participants to explore different stitch techniques in one piece, making it a useful reference to return to beyond the class.
The class is suitable for all levels. No prior embroidery experience is required, though those with some stitching background will find room to build on their existing skills.

Our Teacher
Tihara Smith is a fashion designer and textile artist specialising in raffia embroidery inspired by traditional Caribbean crafts and the Windrush
Generation.
Her work honours her Caribbean heritage and pays tribute to her Caribbean grandparents. In 2021, the London Museum acquired an outfit from her graduate collection to help tell the story of Windrush. Since 2023, she has led workshops for cultural institutions including the V&A and Somerset House, exploring how creativity can be used to celebrate identity. Tihara was selected as one of The King’s Foundation’s 35 Under 35, and in 2026 published her first book Raffia Embroidery: Vibrant Designs Inspired by the Caribbean.
Through collaborations with community groups and organisations, Tihara shares the Windrush story with a wide range of audiences. Her work continues to celebrate the Caribbean and preserve its cultural heritage through thoughtful design.
Tihara is passionate about design and the Caribbean. She strives to create distinctive pieces that give people a little piece of the Caribbean. Her creative practice also includes designing greeting cards, stationery, and accessories – all inspired by the Caribbean.
