Inspired by the Korean technique of Kkekki and the Japanese knot bag form, the Stained Glass Knot Bag combines lightweight fabric and flat felled seams to create a multi-fabric translucent purse.
This project is beginner friendly and can be hand sewn or machine sewn, based on preference.
Our teacher, textile artist and maker Elliot Rockart, will walk students through the process of making flat felled seams, rolled hems, and the log cabin quilt design. As part of the ethos of creative reuse, our kit for this bag uses fabric remnants from Auntie Otie by Susan Hahn.
Students should come to the workshop having followed the first steps of the pattern to create the base fabric for the bag. All who sign up will receive the pattern instructions as well as access to a video which demonstrates how to create the flat felled seam and log cabin design. During the class, Elliot will troubleshoot any difficulties from the class preparation and teach students to construct the bag and sew a rolled hem.

Our Teacher
Elliot Rockart is a nonbinary textile artist, writer, and researcher located in Brooklyn, New York. They combine their love of history and textiles through creating historically inspired knitted, crocheted, embroidered, sewn, woven, hooked, spun, tatted, and appliquéd art. Through this hands-on approach to history, they seek to understand through embodiment the lived experiences of people and collectives who have created textiles across history. Today, their work is primarily inspired by the history of material culture and their own process of medically and socially transitioning as a transmasculine person.
