TATTER TEXTILE RETREAT WITH CHINATSU NAGAMUNE IN MIDCOAST MAINE

June 18th – 23rd, 2023

Join us for a unique, week-long retreat where we will immerse ourselves in indigo resist dyeing practice, Ai Katazome, with artist and educator Chinatsu Nagamune.

ACTIVITY

Our Teacher, Chinatsu Nagamune will lead us through the process of learning all the basic skills involved in Ai Katazome. We will be making unique stencils by hand and then applying a resist paste to fabric to create a unique and beautiful surface design when the cloth eventually meets the indigo vat. You will gain an introductory knowledge of indigo and rice dyeing so that you may continue this work or aspects of this practice in your own making.

You will come away with original, indigo dyed fabric pieces which can be used for all kinds of things — wall hangings, mending projects, quilting, clothing, etc.

CUISINE + ACCOMODATIONS

We will stay in a gorgeous seaside inn on the Maine coast where hiking, swimming and gardens are just outside of your bedroom door. Your days will be spent in the studio, and meals will be served straight from local chefs. You will learn new skills, make new friends, and awaken the spirit.

Chinatsu Nagamune is a fine artist and expert dyer. Born and raised in Tokyo she began codo ceramics + textiles with her husband Andy. For the last 15 years, Chinatsu has been a graphic designer and slowly shifted into textile design and production.

After a long journey through India and Japan, apprenticing with many dyers, Chinatsu now occupies a studio surrounded by woods and animals in Leverett, Massachusetts.

Her focus is making objects that are used on a daily basis and sharing opportunities to appreciate the beauty of weathering and decay. She is usually inspired by her dyeing materials. Through a conversation with the materials, she decides how she wants to dye and make designs.

Chinatsu and her husband have been selling ceramics and textiles together since 2016.
