Join us for a unique, week-long retreat where we will immerse ourselves in an indigo shibori dyeing practice with artist Teresa Misagal.

We will stay on a gorgeous seaside farm on the Maine coast where hiking, swimming and gardens are just outside of your bedroom door. Your days will be spent in the studio, and meals will be served straight from the farm. You will learn new skills, make new friends, and awaken the spirit.

ACTIVITY

In this special four-day workshop, artist Teresa Misagal will guide students through traditional Shibori techniques of stitching, tying, folding, and binding fabric. The manipulated cloth is then carefully submerged into the indigo vat. When the cloth emerges, the resist materials are removed, revealing wondrous patterns. Teresa’s lessons will equip students to execute their creative visions for projects large and small. Students will gain fluency and precision in these techniques.

CUISINE

Private dining experiences will be curated by our hosts at Crow’s Nest, as well as other well-known local chefs, restaurants and farms. Mid-coast Maine has a lively farm-to-table culture which we will enjoy to the fullest.

Teresa Misagal always wanted to do indigo dyeing. The opportunity came when she was a vendor at the Smorgasburg selling her granola, New York Magazine Best of 2014. Needing to cool off her tent during the hot summer, she started dyeing fabric to hang and provide some shade. From that first moment of dyeing, she was hooked. Happy mistakes all the time! The switch from being a granola Smorgasburg vendor to a shibori selling Brooklyn Flea vendor was inevitable.

Teresa wanted to learn more shibori techniques, and to do so, began travel to Japan. She spent 6-8 months of each year 2017 thru 2019 there learning from indigo shibori dyers. Teresa showed work numerous times in Tokyo, Brooklyn and NYC and was even in an indigo segment featured on NHK television.

Teresa earned a B.F.A. in photography at Tisch NYU and worked with some of the top fashion houses over the years, including Anna Sui, Ralph Lauren, Versace and Calvin Klein, as a producer managing their runway collections.
