EMBROIDERY AT TATTER

Embroidery is the inherited tradition of decoration, used to elaborate and strengthen fabric or objects. Practiced across time and place, embroidery celebrates culture and identity.

Here is world emb definition: Embroidery has deep roots in human history. It began as an elaboration of pre-existing sewing and mending techniques, building and expanding upon the decorative and strengthening potential of the stitch. With simple needle and thread as tools, embroidery has been widely adapted over the centuries, resulting in richly varied motifs, techniques, and traditions from around the world. Focused on deep learning and connection, our World Embroidery classes will give you the confidence to communicate and express yourself with needle, thread, and cloth, while expanding your understanding of cultural specificity. Some of our many workshops have taught the traditions of Portuguese, Ainu, and Shisha Mirrorwork embroidery.

Our Creative Embroidery classes are experiential, contemporary workshops that aim to expand stitching skills and to encourage novel approaches to embroidery. The program explores embroidery as writing, painting, drawing, narrative, play, and subversion. It endeavors to foster confidence in the medium and demonstrate its potential for conveying deep concepts and thinking. By employing varying materials and stitching techniques, participants are encouraged to think beyond traditional notions of embroidery and develop their own creative practice with needle, thread, and cloth. Past workshops include Mark-making on Print, Embroidery as Narrative, and Personal Shapes: Embroidery as Drawing.

All embroidery classes offer the opportunity to learn from accomplished teachers who share their knowledge of this universal impulse, exploring motif, methods, and meanings. Stitchers of every level are welcome to participate in embroidery. Tatter typically provides intentional materials that add to the experience.
