Traditional Indigo / Contemporary Practice with Rowland Ricketts

Traditional Indigo / Contemporary Practice with Rowland Ricketts

In this presentation Rowland will discuss his work growing, processing, and dyeing with indigo. He will focus on recent projects that consider this dye within the context of colonialism and historical American textiles.

Rowland and Chinami Ricketts use natural materials and traditional processes to create contemporary textiles. Chinami hand-weaves narrow width yardage for kimono and obi. Rowland hand-dyes textiles that span art and design. Together they grow all the indigo that colors their cloth, investing themselves and their time in the textiles because they believe this way of working to be an essential part of the material’s integrity and authenticity.
